DOVER – Cheatham County Central traveled to Stewart County on Dec. 27 and 28, as the Lady Cubs took down Montgomery Central 45-7 behind stellar defense and the Cubs defeated Houston County 57-33.

The Lady Cubs blew out Montgomery Central by racing out to a 16-3 lead by the end of the first quarter, and that’s as close as the margin would get.

Montgomery Central found shots, and was even able to get open looks close to the basket, but getting the ball to go in proved to be a difficult task. The Lady Cubs went on to win 45-7 as Carlie Hogan (15 points) and Alli Douglas (10) led Cheatham County in scoring.

The Lady Cubs finished the game with 11 different players scoring at least one point. Coach Jim Gibbs knows getting more time from his girls off the bench will be important moving forward.

“I thought we could get after them, and I thought we could apply pressure and the girls bought in,” Gibbs said of his team’s defensive performance. “We’ve got a few wins in a row now, and we want to keep that going.”

The boys matchup between Cheatham County and Houston County proved to be a little closer, especially at the beginning of the game as Houston County had a strong second quarter to stay within five. Cheatham County led 24-19 going into the halftime break.

The second half belonged to Cheatham, though, as the Cubs raced past Houston County on offense and used an improved defense to get the 57-33 win.

Silas Hunter led Cheatham with 23 points and also had a strong defensive showing. Tucker Carter added 11 points.

“In the first quarter we really came out and blitzed them and played hard, but we got complacent in the second quarter,” Cheatham coach Josh Stuart said. “We talked to them at half, and they responded in the second half and came out and played with a ton of effort. We extended our defense a little, and we were able to get some easy layups. When we can play like that, we’re going to be tough to beat.”
