All three Cheatham area high schools competed in the first round of the District 9-AA Tournament this past weekend as Harpeth was able to get a first round victory against Sycamore and then the Indians also beat White House while Cheatham defeated White House in the first round and then lost to White House-Heritage.

Harpeth scored first against Sycamore as a Hayden Penrod ground ball turned into a Sycamore error allowing Ellis Hurt to make it home.

Sycamore would get three in the top of the third inning to take a lead thanks to a Harpeth error on a popup allowing John Hale to come in. Elijah Haskins singled later in the inning to score Noah Nieves and Jack Murray. Sycamore led 3-1 going into the bottom of the third.

Harpeth tied it up at 3-3 after Blake Provo’s single brought in Dawson Capps and then another Penrod ground ball brought in Hurt once again.

Capps’ double in the bottom of the fourth scored two as Trey Gasser came into score along with Ethan Merritt. With those two runs Harpeth took a 5-3 lead and then the Indians scored once more for good measure as Max Sparkman brought in Hurt with a ground ball of his own.

6-3 would end up being the final score and with that win, Harpeth would go on to face White House.

Against White House, Capps, Hurt, Provo and Merritt all collected two RBI each as Provo came in to get the save in the final inning. Up until this season Provo had just been a catcher but coach Zac Mitchell has used the senior a few times now in clutch situations to put away opponents.

Harpeth’s next game is scheduled for Tuesday at 4:30 against the winner of the White House and Sycamore game on Monday evening.

With weather becoming such an issue, Friday’s game against Harpeth was the only one for Sycamore. As mentioned above, Sycamore is scheduled to face White House on Monday to keep its season alive.

Cheatham County Central lost its first game of the tournament to Greenbrier 11-1 as Brady Pemberton picked up two hits and scored the lone Cheatham run. Grant Christy and Cooper Owen also collected a hit each.

With the loss, Cheatham would go on to face Westmoreland. Cheatham’s Carter Pardue started the game and pitched two innings allowing one unearned run. Pemberton then pitched four scoreless innings and DJ Edmondson finished off Westmoreland with one scoreless inning.

Cody Risner led Cheatham with two hits and two RBI. Edmondson, Pardue and Brooks Gibson all scored a run apiece.
