PLEASANT VIEW – Cheatham County girls basketball coach Jim Gibbs was named the county’s best coach at the Main Street awards ceremony on Thursday, July 11 at Livery Stables in Pleasant View.

Around 150 people gathered for the awards breakfast that honored Cheatham County businesses and individuals in 200 different categories including best restaurant, best real estate agent, best car dealer and best elected official. Main Street Media of Tennessee, owner of the Cheatham County Exchange, oversees the program.

Winners were determined public voting that took place over a 30-day period earlier this summer. There were 25,000 votes cast in the contest and 19 different coaches across the county received votes. Sycamore Middle School Cheer coach Laura Anderson was runner up.

“It was surprising to be honest with you,” Gibbs said. “It’s just nice to be recognized by people in the area for the hard work and dedication it takes to coach. Coaching takes a lot of time and that’s evident by being here now.” (at the time of the interview, Gibbs was beginning practice with his team)

Even with all the accolades and a state championship trophy, Gibbs hasn’t taken much time off. The girls won’t be allowed to practice when school starts back so he’s had the team at various camps and in the gym as much as possible during the summer break. He knows this year’s team is completely different from last year’s state champs, but he likes what he has seen so far.

“They work hard and they seem to get along,” Gibbs said. “The locker room is an important place and at least right now this seems to be a group of girls who really do get along and that’s extremely important for a young group like this.”
