Over the course of the season, both Cheatham County and Harpeth volleyball teams have steadily improved as they inch closer to the district tournament.

Those improvements were on full display Tuesday when the Lady Indians defeated the Lady Cubs 3-1. Three of the four matches were decided by four points or fewer, showing how far both sides have come since the beginning of the season.

“It was the difference of a few plays,” Cheatham County coach Aaron Nicholson said. “We gave them some plays we should have had, and we didn’t take advantage of some simple plays that we had. That last set was just us missing a few plays, and us taking it to a fifth set. We’ve been talking about pushing through those plays, but we have to continue to push. We’ve gotten better, and I think they got better that game. It’s a positive heading into the weekend.”

Harpeth took the first game in convincing fashion, 25-14, but the Lady Cubs tied the match 1-1 with a 25-22 game. From there, the Lady Indians won the next two, but they were by narrow 25-22 and 25-21 margins.

“We had some crucial players make some plays there at the end,” Harpeth coach Aleshia Beshears said. “We made plays instead of errors.”

The Lady Indians remain unbeaten in district 10-A with a 3-0 record and are in line to once again make a run in the district tournament and repeat as champions, if they continue their current run of form.

“There are still great things to come,” Beshears said of her group. “I think we have to figure out how to minimize our errors. We tend to dig ourselves into holes, and we’re still digging holes that we have to get out of. Sometimes we don’t enough to get out of the big hole we have dug.”

Harpeth will now host Santa Fe on Thursday and Camden on Monday. Cheatham County will host McEwen on Saturday and Montgomery Central on Tuesday.
