The Clarksville Northwest Lady Vikings took down the Sycamore Lady War Eagles in a 3-1 match on Wednesday.

“We haven’t been able to beat this team yet this season,” said Northwest coach Amy Furnish. “This was a big win for us. It’s a team that I knew we should have beaten in the past, but being able to play at home with some more energy tonight was really good going into next week.”

The game did not appear to be close after the Vikings took the first set 25-15, but Sycamore responded with a 25-15 set win of their own to tie things up.

“They needed to come back and play like they did in the first set,” Furnish said. “That’s the team that needed to be out on the floor again and play. They kind of took for granted the first set and the point difference. They had it in their head that it was going to be an easy set. I told them they needed to pick up that energy and determination to win.”

Nonetheless, Northwest recouped and took the final sets 25-17 and 25-19.

“The big thing we learned today is that we need to start like we finished,” said Sycamore coach Larry Hunter. “We were on fire when we were down 10 points. Playing our guts out. Other points in the game, when it’s close, we weren’t playing like that. To have that fire early in the game and not wait until later.

“The biggest errors we made (were) self-inflicted errors or bad passes. That’s just an adjustment and taking something off of your passes. I think, clearly, that was our Achilles heel. Too many overpasses.”

The Vikings were led by Tierra Newson with 10 kills, while Maddie King and Kaitlynn Furnish each had five. Yasmil Rodriguez and Furnish collected two aces apiece.

Sycamore’s Ella Bailey had 10 kills, four aces and 21 digs. Gracie Parish added four aces and Kierstin Ervin handed out 15 assists.
