Sycamore traveled to Lebanon on Friday and Saturday morning to compete in the State Farm Classic Tournament.

In the first game, Sycamore fell to Lipscomb Academy 39-38 on a last-second layup and rebounded Saturday with a 42-25 win over Independence.

On Friday morning, Sycamore dug an early hole, down 10-3 by the end of the first period, but the Lady War Eagles got back into the game with a 15-point second period.

Sycamore took a 32-25 lead into the final period and had a chance to put the game away with two late free throws, but they were both missed. Lipscomb Academy took the rebound and got a layup right before the buzzer to get the win over Sycamore.

Senior Brayden Suiter had nine points, along with sophomore Kyra Shearon and freshman Izzy McPherson, to lead Sycamore.

“I didn’t really know what to expect after having a 15-day break before playing a game,” said Sycamore coach Cody King. “We only had a handful of practices to get ready to play a good Lipscomb team. With so few days of practice, we were still trying to figure out our lineups, but we played well considering. Ultimately, we built a lead and then got outplayed down the stretch.”

In the second game against Independence, Sycamore built an early lead and never gave it up.

Sycamore had two players in double digits with Callie Gudino, who was named player of the game, leading the Lady War Eagles with 12, and Izzy McPherson followed with 11. Eight Sycamore players scored.

“We knew [Independence] had a serious advantage in height and size, so we wanted to extend our guard pressure and make post entry passes more difficult,” King said. “I thought we did a pretty decent job of pressuring ball handlers. We had a very low percentage shooting-wise, but we made up for it with a solid team defensive effort.”

When Sycamore gets back to the court Dec. 1, it will play host to Fairview.
