Victory Formation

Week 10 Victory Formation

Shelby County will have another high school opening next year, and the school will have its own school system.

With that, comes athletics.

System administrators at Lakeland Schools recently announced that current Lakeland Middle School head coach Tyler White has been named to the same position for the new high school football program.

Lakeland Preparatory School will combine the middle and high school with fifth through 12th grade in the fall of 2022.

The school will be located at 5020 Lions Crest Drive in Lakeland, Tennessee in the northeast corner of Shelby County.

Lakeland Elementary school opened in 2001; the Lakeland Middle school opened in 2017; and the schools are under the leadership of the Lakeland school district.

"Coach White built our middle school team from the ground up,” Lakeland principal Corrie Martin said. “He sees these guys as more than players. They are his family, and he develops them into young men. I know he will do great things with our high school program.”

In this role, Coach White will guide the development of all high school football teams beginning in the 2022-2023 school year, as well as supervise the middle school program.”

The Lions will play a freshman schedule in 2022, a junior varsity schedule in 2023 and are planning a full varsity schedule in 2024, according to White.

We have been in talks a few times with Bernard Childress and Richard McWhirter with TSSAA and they are definitely aware of our intentions and have given us guidance on how things will work going forward as we continue to add grade levels,” White said.

White, 32, is a 13-year coaching veteran. He started the Lion middle school program in 2017 after serving as the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Covington for three seasons.

“I’m really excited and humbled about the opportunity to lead the first high school program here at Lakeland Prep. Coming from a place like Covington, I learned a lot about what a great football program looks like, and it starts with the community,” White said.

He started his coaching career at Munford and spent one season at Brighton Middle school before going to Covington.

“Lakeland has a very supportive community and takes a lot of pride in their schools. I know there will be challenges ahead that come along with building a high school football program, but we already have a great foundation built here at the school, and that is due in part to the support of our administration and athletic director,” White said.

Another school in West Tennessee restarting its football program is Jackson Central Merry, which will play a junior varsity schedule in 2021 and 2022. The school will have enrollment numbers of around 400, similar in size to a Class 2A school.

Jackson Central Merry hired Erit Turner as head coach.
