Main Street Preps has named its 2022 All-Midstate baseball team.

See below for superlative honors and the first, second and third teams.

Player of the Year: Carson Rucker, Goodpasture, Jr.

Resume: .541 AVG, 74 R, 13 2B, 14 HR, 77 RBI, 27 BB, 12 SB

Rucker has always been a good hitter, but with added experience and strength the Tennessee commitment took his power to the next level this spring. His three home runs at the Division II-A final four were a big reason why Goodpasture won its first title since 2012. The TBCA Mr. Baseball winner also showcased speed on the basepaths and flashed the leather at third base, making him a rare five-tool player.

Pitcher of the Year: Eli Huddleston, Upperman, Jr.

Resume: 10-0 record, 0.44 ERA, 64 IP, 35 H, 4 ER, 13 BB, 99 K

Clarksville Academy junior DJ Merriweather throws a pitch during a game earlier this season. Merriweather has been named the 2022 Main Street Preps Baseball Two-Way Player of the Year.Phil Stauder / Main Street Nashville

There wasn’t an ace who delivered more often than Huddleston did for the Bees. The left-hander threw a complete game against Page in the region semifinals, then allowed just one run over 6 and 2/3 innings in Upperman’s Class 3A state tournament opener. Huddleston returned to the mound four days later and pitched a seven-inning shutout against Covington to lead the Bees to their first title since 1993.

Two-Way Player of the Year: DJ Merriweather, Clarksville Academy, Jr.

Batting: .580 AVG, 57 R, 23 2B, 6 HR, 59 RBI, 31 BB, 29 SB

Pitching: 8-2 record, 1.39 ERA, 47.2 IP, 26 H, 10 ER, 31 BB, 82 K

Merriweather truly did it all for Clarksville Academy, which went 28-9 and fell two wins short of advancing to the DII-A final four. The TBCA Mr. Baseball finalist was as dangerous at the plate as he was effective on the mound. The worst part for opposing teams? Like Rucker and Huddleston, Merriweather will be back next season.

Coach of the Year: Mark Purvis, Watertown

Resume: 29-9 record, Class 2A state title

Purvis spent 18 years as the head coach at Mt. Juliet, guiding the Golden Bears to eight sectional trips and sending over 100 players to the college ranks. However, he never won a state title. That changed last month when Purvis, in his second season as the Purple Tigers coach, led Watertown to a 10-3 win over Pigeon Forge in the championship game.

Team of the Year: Eagleville Eagles

Resume: 37-2 record, Class 1A state title

Eagleville ran through its regular-season schedule and the state tournament to win its first title in program history, one day after the school’s softball team accomplished the same feat. Led by senior slugger Nathan Brewer and a wealth of young pitching talent, the Eagles outscored their opponents 400-113 across 39 games.
