Boys and girls tennis: 25 Nashville-area players to watch in 2022

Tennis season is well underway, and there are plenty of stars to watch in 2022.

Here are some of the top boys and girls players to keep an eye on this spring.

GIRLS

Riley Collins, Ensworth, Sr.: Collins (8-1) was a star in No. 1 singles for 12-2 Ensworth (12-2) last year. In addition to taking matches from Brentwood Academy standout Payton Tomicheck, Collins and teammate Anna Chambers reached the Division II-AA doubles finals.

Vivy Huddleston, Brentwood, So., and Belle Huddleston Brentwood, Sr.: The Huddlestons made a run to last year’s Large Class Doubles championship before falling to Science Hill.

Gracie Kelly, Summertown, Jr.: She and Ella Konig clinched the Small Class Doubles championship last year.

Ayden Kujawa, Clarksville Academy, Sr.: Kujawa and CPA’s Ella Sallee were the lone Midstate players to reach the 2021 Division II-A girls singles semifinals.

Lisa Messier, Franklin, Sr.: As a junior, Messier completed a perfect 22-0 season in No. 1 singles and helped lead Franklin to its first ever state finals.

Carlie Mitchell, Harpeth Hall, Sr.: Mitchell reached the Division II-AA state quarterfinals last year.

Grace Stout, Ravenwood, Jr.: As a sophomore, Stout was one of just two Midstate players to reach the Large School singles state quarterfinals.

Ella Sallee, CPA, Sr.: The No. 1 singles standout fueled a big team year for CPA, helping the Lions to a second-place district finish, third in the region and into the quarterfinals of the state tournament for the first time since 2011. Individually, Sallee finished first in district, second in region and fourth at state.

Payton Tomichek, Brentwood Academy, So.: Tomichek (14-4) held down the No. 1 spot as a freshman for the Eagles, winning the Middle Region individual singles title and advancing to the Division II-AA semifinals.

Marisa Wirtz, Station Camp, Sr.: She and Stout were the only Midstate players to reach the Large School singles quarterfinals.

BOYS

Anson Anderson, MBA, Sr.: With Baylor Sai graduated and off to college, Anderson is one of several experienced players looking to step up this year for the Big Red. He was part of a doubles tandem that reached the 2021 Division II-AA semifinals.

Patrick Delves, Ravenwood, Sr.: Delves met an early exit after drawing Station Camp’s Carter Ramthum in the Large School Singles state tournament quarterfinals. But he helped the Raptors capture their fourth team state championship in the last seven years.

Chase Etheredge, Station Camp, Jr.: He and then-senior teammate Lance Watson made it to the Large Class Doubles state quarterfinals last year, but drew the eventual champions from Ravenwood out of the gate.

Ian Fryer, Watertown, Sr.: He and senior teammate Jackson Thomas will try to get another look at the Small Class Doubles title after reaching the state quarterfinals last season.

Tobias Mandeville, Merrol Hyde, So.: As a freshman he made the Small Class Singles state quarterfinals, but drew eventual champion Evan Car from L&N STEM.

Leo Menzie, CPA, Jr.: Menzie and his brother Aiden made it to the Division II-A Doubles state semifinals last year.

Foster Pierce, MBA, Sr.: One of Tennessee’s top seniors according to tenniscrecruiting.net, he fell to Ensworth’s Hank Trondson in the Division II-AA semifinals last season.

Carter Ramthum, Station Camp, Sr.: Ramthum advanced further than any Midstate player in the Large School Singles state tournament, reaching the semifinals where he fell to eventual champion Ranjay Arul from Collierville.

Nicholas Roth, CPA, Jr.: Roth made a memorable run to the Division II-A semifinals. He was eliminated by eventual state champion Walker Stearns from St. George’s.

Henry Stack, USN, Jr.: As a sophomore he reached the Division II-A Singles state semifinals.

Jackson Stone, Ravenwood, Sr.: Stone paired with Ethan Eisenhauer and raced to the Large School doubles championship last year.

Jackson Thomas, Watertown, Sr.: He and senior teammate Ian Fryer will try to get another look at the Small Class Doubles title after reaching the state quarterfinals last season.

Hank Trondson, Ensworth, Jr.: Trondson (10-3) only lost to one player last season, MBA’s Sai. Trondson went through McCallie’s Colin Tuttle and MBA’s Foster Pierce to reach the Division II-AA state singles finals, where he fell to Sai.
