The Christ Presbyterian Academy Lions soccer team controlled play throughout their game Tuesday at Gallatin and came away with a 2-0 win.

“They controlled the game,” Gallatin coach Greg Harper said. “They’re a really good team. They’re well-coached.”

Although the Lions carried the play, they were only able to dent the Gallatin defense twice.

“We defended well,” Harper said. “We made a couple of mistakes. Our back four played extremely well.”

The Green Wave did a good job of keeping CPA’s offense to the outside for most of the game. CPA opened the scoring with 21:17 left in the first half.

Forward Sam Ellis collected a pass to the right of the goal and tucked into the left corner to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

At the start of the second half, Gallatin had its only sustained offensive pressure, but couldn’t convert on goal. After weathering Gallatin’s push, CPA re-established control of the game.

The Lions added their second goal with 16:20 left in the game. Gallatin goalkeeper Mykal Manfred came far out of the goal to try to grab the ball, but it got past him.

CPA forward Baker Avinger picked up the loose ball with an open path to the goal. After dribbling to the goal, Avinger slipped the ball into an open net to give the Lions a 2-0 lead.

“It was a good test,” Harper added. “We’ve got to grow more as a team. Guys have to pull together and we have to handle adversity better. We struggle with that.”

Gallatin’s record falls to 3-2-2. The Wave will travel to Knoxville this weekend for the Bearden Invitational. The Green Wave will play, Bearden, Farragut and Oak Ridge on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
