The Mustangs introduced Kevin Mawae as their new football coach Tuesday, again securing another former NFL player for the job. Mawae replaces Super Bowl-winning quarterback Trent Dilfer.
Mawae appeared during a press conference on the Lipscomb University campus in the George Shinn Center.
“This is my last job,” Mawae said, referring to the fit of the position at Lipscomb. He said the NFL lifestyle ran its course for him and that he wanted to spend more time with family.
In 16 NFL seasons, Mawae played center for the Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets and Tennessee Titans. He was named to the Pro Bowl eight times and once served as president of the NFL Players Association.
He began coaching soon after. Mawae, a Georgia native who became an All-SEC center at LSU in college, has been an offensive line coach for the Indianapolis Colts for the past two years.
Lipscomb hinted that its new coach would be cut from an NFL mold. The Mustangs reportedly tried and missed in its attempt to hire Elizabethton native Jason Witten, a former Dallas Cowboys tight end who now coaches high school football in Texas.
Before leaving Lipscomb for UAB in December, Dilfer made the Mustang program into a winner, despite lacking formal coaching experience at first. Lipscomb has won 21 consecutive games including two straight Division II-AA state championships. Next season the Mustangs are moving up to Division II-AAA, Tennessee’s highest level of football.
