Marcel Reed may return to the field sooner rather than later.
The Montgomery Bell Academy quarterback is questionable for Friday’s game against Ensworth after suffering a shoulder injury during a 20-17 win over Pope Prep last week.
However, his father and former Tennessee State football coach Rod Reed told Main Street Preps that Marcel’s x-rays came back negative and that “he’s feeling a lot better.”
The four-star prospect, who holds offers from the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and Vanderbilt, could be back in action as soon as this week.
“It will probably be a game time decision,” Rod said via a Twitter direct message.
Either way, Reed avoiding serious injury is good news for him and MBA sports. The junior is also a starting guard for the school’s basketball team, which won the Division II-AA state championship last season.
Reed went down in the second quarter against Pope Prep and spent the second half standing on the sideline with his right arm in a sling.
On a play near the goal line, Reed rolled out for a pass and took a hit to his throwing shoulder just as he released the ball. Junior QB Colin Kerrigan replaced him and finished 3-of-6 passing for 79 yards.
Reed has been key to MBA’s turnaround since the Big Red lost three consecutive games to Pearl-Cohn, McCallie and CPA earlier this season. He is 57-of-103 passing for 764 yards and eight touchdowns to go along with 307 rushing yards and five scores on 62 carries through seven games.
MBA is 4-3 overall (2-1 in league play) and remains in the hunt for the Division II-AAA East & Middle Region title.
