Spring Fling produced a number of captivating moments to close the 2021-22 high school sports season. Main Street Preps will rewind the best from last week in baseball, softball, tennis, and track and field.

Today we’ll relive the TSSAA track and field championships’ top moments, listed alphabetically.

Barion Brown ends with a bang: Bound for Kentucky to play football, Pearl-Cohn senior Barion Brown went out in style, winning the 100- and 200-meter dash, the 400 and anchoring the Firebirds’ 4×200 championship team. A notable tidbit on Brown’s running career: He’s just the third Pearl-Cohn state champion sprinter in the past 38 years. Craig Hodge won the 100 and 200 in 1983 for Nashville Pearl. Rontavius Groves won the 200 in 2015.

Central Magnet’s Blake Yuenger goes out a champion: The senior won the 3,200 with a 9:52.79 time to give the Tigers just their second individual champion in school history.

Eriyanna Reed closes on a high note: The Hillsboro sprinter bound for UAB next year capped her career by defending her 2021 championship in the 400.

FRA boys win first team title since 2003: The Panthers added to their trophy case with a fifth team championship.

Jaelyn Marsh claims 100-meter title: Nashville Christian’s fifth-place team finish was boosted by Marsh’s winning 10.92 finish in the 100.

London Humphreys has a day: The CPA football/track standout ran wild in the DII-AA meet, grabbing four first-place medals in tough conditions, winning the long jump, 100- and 200-meter dash, and running a leg on the Lions’ 4x100m championship relay team.

Midstate impresses in field event championships: Consider these a cluster of moments.

The Nashville area won 25 of 60 total field events out of all girls and boys classifications, coming out to 42%. There were pockets of big success. For instance, Midstate athletes Aidan Brown (Brentwood Academy, pole vault), London Humphreys (CPA, long jump), Kolby Jones (Brentwood Academy, triple jump), Judah Doyle (CPA, high jump), and Drake Carlson (Father Ryan, shot put and discus) swept every single field event in Division II-AA boys.

Midstate throwers Carolyn McRee (Maplewood, shot put), Reghan Grimes (Ravenwood, shot and discus), Mensi Stiff (Brentwood Academy, shot and disc), and LaNaya Roberts (MLK, discus) won 6 of 10 total throwing championships. On the boys side, Cole Combs (Page, shot), Josiah Jackson (FRA, shot), and Drake Carlson (Father Ryan, shot and disc) helped the area win 4 of 10.

In pole vault, championships from Carolina Bannach and Kyler Nichols (Green Hill); Payton Culp (FRA); Aidan Brown (Brentwood Academy); and Holly Schreiber (USN) gave the Midstate five of the possible 10 titles.

Midstate wins four of five girls team championships: The Nashville area showed up in the team races, winning every classification except Class AA. Pearl-Cohn (A) captured its first championship since 2008 and second all-time; Brentwood (AAA) repeated as champion to earn its sixth title; University School of Nashville (DII-A) won its first girls track title; and Harpeth Hall (DII-AA) added to its state-best championship total to reach 17.

Pentathlon, decathlon titles come in droves: The Nashville area brought home seven of the 10 pentathlon and decathlon events put on in five different boys and girls classifications. On the girls side, champions were Aniyah Marshall, East Nashville (A); Amya Joy, MLK (AA); Elise Dobson, Nolensville (AAA); and Aubrey Lane, GCA (DII-A). Boys winners were Aiden Carter, Brentwood (AAA); Thatcher Frankfather, Franklin Road Academy (DII-A); and Sam Fisher, Lipscomb Academy (DII-AA).

Stegall impresses again in distance races: Nolensville freshman Claire Stegall turned heads with record Great Eight Invitational times in April, then broke the state record in the 3,200 with a 10:21 in a Class AAA sectional. She cruised in the 1,600 and 3,200 at the Class AAA state meet, running 4:50.40 and 10:36.16, respectively. Her 1,600 time was a state meet record.
