Waverly to play White House at Nissan Stadium on Sept. 16

Waverly football will get a chance to play on the big stage next week.

The Tigers will take on White House at Nissan Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 16, Waverly coach Randall Boldin told Main Street Preps on Wednesday morning.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The game was originally scheduled to be played at Waverly, but last month’s devastating flooding in Humphreys County caused extensive damage to the Tigers’ stadium and football facilities.

“It was all (the Titans). It was their idea and something they wanted to do,” Boldin said. “We’re extremely appreciative and thankful for the opportunity they’ve given to us.”

After taking Week 2 off, Waverly rolled to a 42-20 win at Sycamore last week. Boldin said the rest of Waverly’s 2021 games, including home dates with Stewart County (Sept. 24) and White House Heritage (Oct. 8), will be played on the road.

The team’s field is still covered in glass, nails and chemicals from the floodwaters. Stadium bleachers and fencing are also in disrepair.

Boldin said he wants his team to enjoy the experience of playing in an NFL stadium while also staying focused for the important Region 6-3A matchup.

“Our focus will be on understanding that we still have to play football that day,” Boldin said. “We can’t get enamored with the situation we’re in. They’ll all got to focus, but we’re really excited about next Thursday.”

Waverly is 2-0 with six games remaining on its schedule, including a contest at McNairy Central this Friday.

The return of football was a welcome change of pace for Waverly last week. About 200 fans traveled to the Sycamore game after nearly two weeks of cleanup efforts.

“We’re just trying to get back to some normalcy,” Boldin said. “That’s a word that a lot of people in this community have used. However we can do that is exactly what we’re trying to accomplish.”
