DICKSON – Both the Dickson Cougars and Lady Cougars basketball teams defeated Independence on Tuesday night to earn a sweep over their District 11-AAA rivals. The Cougars held on to win 66-58, while the Lady Cougars ran away for a 57-43 victory.
Three Cougars scored in double digits as Jaden Davis led the way with 16 points, Cade Purvine added 15 and Zade Holt came off the bench for 13.
Independence led 15-12 after the first quarter and held a 30-27 at halftime. But the second half belonged to Dickson, which outscored Independence 39-28 in the final two quarters.
Dickson finished with 38 points in the paint, which was 10 more than Independence, and outscored Eagles 29-13 in points off turnovers. Dickson had 15 bench points to Independence’s six.
“We haven’t played well here lately, but I didn’t think we played that bad in the second half,” Dickson coach Hal Murrell said. “We didn’t shoot free throws very well, and we gambled a little bit putting ourselves in some bad situations, but I felt like we actually started playing a little looser and freely and resembling what we looked like before the Brentwood game (on Jan. 24).”
“We’ve been in a funk and we could have laid down when we got done by nine, so I’m proud of the effort. It’s up to the guys now. There’s nothing else as far as X’s and O’s that we can teach them. There’s nothing we haven’t seen and there’s nothing we haven’t faced.”
The Lady Cougars started out strong by taking a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. They also led 27-21 at the break.
At the end of the third, Independence had yet to go away and trailed just 38-33, but the Lady Cougars dominated the final quarter to pull away.
Madison Geisler led Dickson with a team-high 11 points. Caty Roberts added 10 points and eight assists, while AC Milam scored nine points on a trio of 3-point makes in the fourth quarter.
“I was impressed with our girls’ fight,” Lady Cougar coach Erin Webb said. “I’ve said that a few times this year, but tonight we really had to work for it and not give up. (Independence) would make a run and we would sustain it, and then we would make a run and they would sustain it. There was a lot of back-and-forth throughout that game, and I’m proud we never quit.”
“We were able to stay composed and we played classy tonight. That’s my expectation every night, but I’m more proud of that than anything on the scoreboard. And since we were able to stay composed, that’s why the scoreboard ended up the way it did.”
Another Lady Cougar who stood out was Ashley Jackson. Her play, especially on defense, isn’t something that showed up in a stat sheet, but she held Independence star Jailyn Banks to 18 points.
“I felt like Ashley played beautiful defense on Jailyn (Banks) – (that) girl is going to be special,” Webb said. “I couldn’t have asked for any more from her.”
