The Creek Wood Lady Red Hawks started their district tournament last week against Waverly before the weather showed up and defeated Waverly 70-38 to get things started.
After that, Stewart County came to town, and Creek Wood dispatched of them, as well, with a 53-40 win and then put away East Hickman in the district championship, 60-35.
A district championship allowed the Lady Red Hawks to play host to the first round of the regional tournament, as they played Giles County. Creek Wood defeated Giles County, 76-39.
Creek Wood took a 14-8 lead at the end of the first against Giles County but then they were off. The Lady Red Hawks exploded in the second quarter to take 33-16 lead to the half, and they never slowed down.
Creek Wood’s Brianna Burgess scored 33 points in the effort against Giles County to join the 1,000-point club. Burgess, only a sophomore, may have a chance at the school record of 2,441 points set by Vanderbilt standout Rachel Bell.
“Once I saw the ball go in, I got really excited, and then I turned around and saw all of my teammates cheering for me, and that’s when it started to feel real,” Burgess said. “I just want to thank my coaches and my teammates for everything they’ve done for me.”
In addition to Burgess’ output, Creek Wood coach Russell Wilson was happy with his team’s offensive performance and execution.
“I thought we scored really well and made us some shots early that allowed us to build a lead,” Wilson said. “There’s always room for improvement, though. I don’t really think we rebounded well, but in region play, you need two wins to get to the region championship and sub-state opportunity, and we just got one of them, so we’ll take it any way we can get it.”
Coming up will be a big test for Creek Wood as they play host to Fairview. Fairview is the only team that has beaten Creek Wood in the district, and they’ve done it twice. Fairview’s size down low has presented issues for the Lady Red Hawks so far, but those past games won’t matter when they faced off March 1 for a ticket to the Region 6-AA championship.
Allie Burgess, Autumn Burgess and Brianna Burgess were all named to the 11-AA All-District team, while Allie Burgess, Autumn Burgess and Raegan Taylor were named to the All-Tournament team, and Brianna Burgess was named tournament MVP.
