Jason Stockton is in charge of his old team.

Hunters Lane promoted the former Warrior to head boys basketball coach Tuesday. Stockton had been an assistant with the girls team for the past three years in addition to leading the school’s JROTC program.

Stockton attended and played basketball at Hunters Lane in the early 1990s.

“(He) quickly rose to the top of our candidates as the total package. We are confident he has the history and insight to produce a great team for our school,” Hunters Lane principal Dr. Susan Kessler said in a release.

Stockton replaces Anthony Sewell, a fixture on the sideline since his 2001 hire. He guided the Jeremiah Crutcher-led Warriors to the 2006 Class AAA state tournament. That group went 28-6 and earned the program’s third and most recent state tourney berth.

Effective July 1, Sewell will begin his new role as Hunters Lane assistant principal. The school district does not permit administrators to coach.

“Coach Sewell has done phenomenal work as a teacher and coach and I am looking forward to seeing his work as an administrator,” Kessler said.

Hunters Lane went 6-4 in this past season, which was shortened due to COVID-19.
