Jo Byrns had an offensive performance for the ages Monday night against White House.

After suffering three-straight losses, the Red Devils (4-5) scored 86 in a 14-point win. Eighty-six points is the most Jo Byrns has scored in the past 20 years.

“It wasn’t about us going in here and scoring 80 points,” head coach Jojo Northington said. “It was more simple; it was about us going in and winning quarter by quarter.

“We were just staying consistent with what we do on our offensive side. They had a bunch of defensive miscommunications and letdowns, so we just exploited them on defense.”

Northington’s team made 20 free throws, shot 70% from the field and hit 4-of-7 shots from deep. Jacob Miller and Kenny Tolliver scored 25 and 24, respectively, to lead the Red Devils on offense.

“We calmed down a little bit,” Miller said. “We ran the offense and just looked for good, open possessions and open shots.”

White House junior Zane Brown scored 12 points in the first quarter to give the Blue Devils a 23-18 lead.

Jo Byrns responded in the second and led by just one at halftime, but it was a 29-point outburst in the third that helped them build a lead they wouldn’t let go of.

The Red Devils came out of halftime with a 12-2 run.

“The third quarter we got just punched right in the mouth and never responded,” said White House coach Caleb Cook. “They whipped us in the paint, they beat us off the dribble, we couldn’t slide over and take a charge … we just couldn’t get stops, and that’s credit to them.”

White House (2-9) has allowed over 80 points per game in its last two and dropped its seventh straight on Monday. Cook called the night “frustrating” in regards to his team’s effort and inexperience.

“I’ve got to be disciplined to keep my patience to keep teaching,” he said. “To keep showing them what we’re doing wrong and how we can fix it … We just have to keep doing it.

“Those young guys are getting a lot of experience, and there’s no better teaching tool than the experience that they’re getting night in and night out in these games.”

Brown and sophomore Ryan Worrell scored 41 of their team’s 72 points in the loss. Jo Byrns had four players reach double figures.

“We don’t go into a game thinking we’re going to score a set amount of points,” Northington said. “We just want to play hard and win.”

The Blue Devils finished the two-day classic on Tuesday against Westmoreland. Jo Byrns played White House Heritage.
