Forcing five turnovers, Summertown turned its first homefield playoff game into its first playoff victory Friday, defeating visiting East Hickman 34-19 in a back-and-forth Class 2A opening-round affair.
Ty Bryant’s 25-yard ‘pick-6’ with just under three minutes to play virtually settled the contest that saw the hosts score first, but trail 19-14 midway through the third period.
East Hickman quarterback Kyle England’s 75-yard scoring run put the visitors ahead, before Summertown (8-2) scored the final 20 points of the night. Colton Shaffer’s 3-yard run and a two-point Javen Edmiston conversion made it a 22-19 game, before Edmiston scored from three yards out — his second touchdown of the game — with 4:46 to play.
Two minutes later, Bryant put the finishing touches on the win.
Summertown (8-2), which previously lost road playoff games at Whitwell in 2016 and at Waverly two years ago, will travel to top-seeded Riverside, a 45-13 winner Friday over Loretto, in the upcoming second round.
East Hickman, with the loss, finishes 7-3.
