To be great, you have to play the great teams – and the Clarksville Wildcats know it.

They hosted out-of-district foe Cane Ridge on Thursday night and, though they fell 73-66, coach Ted Young was not discouraged by his squad’s effort in the slightest.

“There’s no doubt we made them play their best ballgame,” Young said. “(Cane Ridge) had to call some timeouts at some points in the ballgame, we got the momentum going and all teams are looking to get that tournament tough attitude going on.”

A team comprised mostly of guards, the Wildcats knew they faced a tall task in attempting to stop Raven Brandon Miller, widely considered a top recruit in the 2022 class.

The 6-foot-6 forward was still able to amass 16 points, but Jamarco Mimms defended him tightly, forcing other Ravens to step up. Unfortunately for CHS, they did; four other Cane Ridge players reached double digit point totals.

“I thought the first half, really most of the ballgame, we held him under control with it,” Young said. “Some of their guards got really hot and they kept finding the hot hand. You can tell they enjoy playing with one another.”

One of the key differences was that the Ravens made 23-of-28 free throw attempts. The Wildcats had just 5-of-9.

Regardless, Clarksville hung with Cane Ridge throughout the entire game and answered runs with runs. Eventually, it came down to defense.

“It’s the points we gave up,” Young said. “We scored enough points to win the ballgame. We just gave up points. We always look at that first. When we get those things corrected, we’re going to be in every ball game. The kids are talented enough.”
