Honoring the 2020 Northwest spring sports seniors

With the 2020 spring sports season being canceled prematurely due to the coronavirus pandemic in the United States, the high school careers of several Tennessee and Montgomery County athletes have been cut short.

Main Street Clarksville would like to shine a light on those seniors who will no longer be with their schools next season. Below is a list of Northwest High School spring sports seniors and information on them as provided by the school.

Baseball

John Austin Hayes Biemesderfer. Son of John and Angie Biemesderfer. Position: Util/RHP Extracurricular Activities: HOSA (4 yrs), NHS, NTHS, NSHS. Plans to attend college with a major in health and human performance.

Advice: “Don’t change who you are and stay true to yourself and have a good work ethic. Baseball is much more than a sport and will teach you a lot about life. Cherish it because tomorrow is not promised and give all the glory to God.”

Jonathan Rakeem Dantzler. Son of Roy and Kimberly Dantzler. Positions: 3B/RHP. Extracurricular Activities: HOSA (2 yrs). Plans to become a physical therapist.

Advice: “If you want something, go get it; no matter the cost.” 

Quentin Alexander Grom. Son of Tim Grom. Position: LHP. Plans to “serve the greatest country to ever exist in the U.S. Army.”

Advice: “Nothing is more important than the bond you have with your teammates so treat the next guy like family and be the best team y’all know you can be.”

Cody Levi Kirkland. Son of Daniel and Grizel Kirkland  Position: CF/LHP. Extracurricular Activities: National Junior Society (2 yrs). Plans to play baseball at the junior college level while figuring out what to study then transfer to a four-year school for a degree.

Advice: “Play every game like it’s your last and always enjoy the little things because before you know it your time will be up.”

Nicholas Ryan Myers. Son of Corey and Julie Myers. Positions: Util/RHP. Extracurricular Activities: Wrestling (4 yrs), FFA (2 yrs). Plans to attend Austin Peay State University and be successful. 

Advice: “Everyone wishes they would’ve worked hard. No one wishes they didn’t work hard.”

Marcus A. Newsom. Son of Clinton and Maria Newsom. Position: Catcher.  Extracurricular Activities: NHS, HOSA (4 yrs), ASG (2 yrs), Overall Student Government Secretary, Health Science Academy (4 yrs), CMCSS Student Advisory Council (3 yrs), Mainstream, Northwest Health Council, ASG Northwest Noise, Student 2 Student Club. Plans to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga to major in psychology and minor in economics. Plans to use his degree to go into law school to become a prosecuting attorney or go to medical school to become a psychologist.

Xavier Moise. “Excellent student. High grades, and member of the ASG for high school years; President of ASG senior year. Xavier Started as most of the players: a beginner who excelled, I am proud of him. Great sportsmanship. Great player. Great person.”

Luis Ortiz.Consistent at the No. 2 singles position for the past three years, as well as No. 1 doubles with partner Warren Smith. Knowing him will bring you only pride. I have no doubt that he will succeed in life. I am proud of him.”

Quinţin Coates. “Walked on the courts during a summer practice and stayed. He went from watching to playing, to winning and gaining confidence in his own abilities. Consistent in the top four singles, and the number two doubles, his play showed his dedication to the sport, and through that, to his desire to succeed in life. I admire him, I am proud of him. I have no doubts that he will succeed in anything he chooses.”

Warren Smith.Captain and No. 1 player for Northwest Tennis for the past three years, as well as No. 1 doubles with Luis Ortiz. Great grades. Great all-around guy. Good leadership. Extremely talented young man on and off the tennis courts. His future is certain to be positive, no matter what obstacles we all face now. I am proud of him.”

Softball

Libby Smith.My future goals are to go to college at Austin Peay State University and work with sports medicine. The school organization I was in was a basketball cheerleader for two seasons. The funniest moment was when Coach Holli’s shirt/jacket almost flew off at practice. I would like to say that I am going to miss high school and softball. (I) will come back and be our biggest helper/fan.

Mackenzie Dixon. My future goal is to become a United States Air Force Nurse. I was on the softball team for two years. My (favorite) memory was our lock-in this season. I aspire to become a softball coach and teach girls everything I know about the sport that I love the most.

Olivia Randall. Played softball and volleyball for four years, cross country for two years. Involved in FFA, ASG, NHS, Spanish Club, and SNHS. Plans to attend University of Tennessee at Martin to study agricultural business. 

“My funniest memory I have in softball is when everyone picked up worms from the tarp and I held them while we warmed up until Holli came into the dugout, and I tossed them at her and she freaked out.”

Girls track

Juanita Jimenz. Daughter of Estella Jimenez. Ran middle distance for three years. Participated in JROTC and played soccer, cross country and wrestling. She was a member of NHS, SNHS, and International Club. Plans to attend Austin Peay State University for JROTC and seek a career as an officer in the U.S. Army.
