The Rossview Hawks are flying high after snapping a streak of back-to-back losses in their 40-point district beatdown of West Creek.

Tuesday’s contest was never in doubt for the Hawks. After winning the opening tip, Rossview’s Ty Butler nailed a three-point shot within the first six seconds of action. Their fast start was indicative for the remainder of the first period, as the Hawks jumped out to a 13-3 advantage and held a 24-7 lead at the end of one.

“I mean, it started defensively,” said Rossview head coach Johnny Jackson. “I think, finally, we kind of glued in tonight, because we just all took care of our business. And then we were great helping tonight, I just feel like that makes offense go. If you play defense, you get stops and then you turn and we got some easy buckets. I just thought that was huge tonight, our defensive effort was incredible.”

West Creek was never fully able to recover following the first. The Coyotes’ attempt to up their pace of play in the second only led to the Hawks staying hot offensively. Despite coming into the game with back-to-back wins for the first time this season, West Creek found themselves behind by as many as 28 points before the break.

“To be honest, it wasn’t a lack of effort on our part,” said Coyotes head coach Russell Malone. “It wasn’t a lack of playing hard. I give our kids credit, we were playing hard. But a lot of times, our effort and our energy was kind of going in the wrong direction and not doing the right thing.”

Rossview was in firm control of the game throughout the duration of the second half and came away with the 79-39 victory. Even when Jackson’s starters took a seat on the bench in the middle of the third, the second and third team squads still managed to outscore the Coyotes 27-21 the rest of the way. A total of 14 players scored for Rossview on the night, leaving only one active player to not notch a point for the Hawks.

After a disappointing 2-3 start since coming back from Montgomery County’s winter pause from athletics, Rossview has seemingly put the pieces together at just the right time. With the second installment of a rivalry game against Clarksville on the docket, Jackson knew that Tuesday’s game was pivotal to their success down the stretch.

“We went on the road and we were putting up 40 (points) and not shooting the ball well, not taking care of the ball and we ran into two buzzsaws,” he said. “We’ve had effort, it’s just the ball wasn’t going through. It was good for us tonight to see the ball go through.”

West Creek falls to 3-8 with the defeat and travels to play Station Camp on Thursday, Jan. 21. The Coyotes will return to district action the following day at Springfield.
