Greenbrier junior Halle Barnes waited until the fourth quarter to do her damage.

That worked out fine for the Lady Bobcats, who ended Friday’s game against visiting Springfield on a 15-3 run to pick up a 39-28 victory.

Barnes scored all 11 of her points in the final frame. She went a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line to seal the win for Greenbrier.

“She’s one of our biggest offensive threats, but she has been struggling to score the past few games,” Greenbrier coach Brianna Gillen said. “Hopefully that fourth quarter is going to give her more confidence.”

Greenbrier junior Hailey Blair, who started in place of injured senior Kayla Conquest (shoulder), and sophomore Emma Disney both finished with eight points. Senior Snowden Scott added seven.

Springfield struggled on the offensive end, managing just eight points by halftime. Deondra Miles scored the lone basket for either team in the second quarter. Greenbrier led 11-8 at the break.

“That was a tough one,” Springfield coach Kelli Reed said. “We have to knock more shots down. We got a lot of open looks, we just didn’t knock them down. There were a lot of little things that killed us.”

The Lady Yellow Jackets briefly took the lead when Elizabeth Funk hit a three to make it 25-24 with six minutes remaining. But Springfield went cold from the field after that, and Barnes took over for Greenbrier. The Lady Bobcats finished 8-for-12 on free throws in the fourth quarter.

“We’ve been struggling to finish close games,” Gillen said. “We just kind of fold (at the end). Tonight, we finally did it. Free throws saved us in the end.”

Ky’asia Gardner and Caroline Watts carried Springfield with six points apiece. Funk contributed five.

“Both teams struggled,” Reed said. “You can tell we’ve not been in a rhythm (due to winter break). But no excuses, we just have to keep working hard.”

Greenbrier went on to beat Portland 30-28 on Saturday night. Barnes again led the Lady Bobcats with 15 points. Scott finished with seven and Blair had six.
