Curtis Holland named member of the year by tennis organization

Longtime Springfield High School Tennis coach Curtis Holland was named the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) Member of the Year for the state of Tennessee at the organization’s symposium last month on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Holland earned the award that is presented to a member who has shown dedication and diligence in promoting and supporting tennis and PTR. A PTR Clinician and Tester, and lifetime member of the American Tennis Association, Holland has been involved in tennis for 45 years as a player, teaching pro and coach. In 2012, the courts on Garner Street in Springfield were renamed the Curtis Holland Tennis Complex.

Holland is the longest tenured coach at Springfield High School and continues to take the tennis teams to greater heights. Under his 32-year leadership, the tennis program has one of the best winning records of all Springfield High School sports.

The girls overall record is 272-209, including two girls Region 5 team championships and two state sectional (Elite Eight) appearances in the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association state playoffs. His girls have had 22 winning seasons.

Holland’s girls teams have won 12 regular season district championships and nine district tournament championships. The team also reached the Sweet 16 in the state five times.

He has also coached 10 district girls singles champions, seven singles runners-up, eight girls doubles champions and 10 girls doubles runners-up.

Holland has coached 61 girls who earned a combined 102 all district honors.

The current overall record for Holland’s boys teams is 253-207. The team has had 24 winning seasons and from 1988 to 1996 the boys were undefeated in District 19 regular season play.

Holland has coached 10 boys district tournament championship teams and his Jackets reached the Sweet 16 five times.

Holland has coached 11 district singles champions, seven singles runners-up, 11 doubles champions, five doubles runners-up and 43 of his boys have been named all district 102 times.

Holland has coached six players to the state high School championships. Kyle Thomas and Beau Rader won the 2002 Region 5A/AA Doubles Championship to become the first region individual champions in Springfield High School history. He also coached Justin Hamm to become the first Region 5AAA singles champion in school history in 2007.
