KINGSTON SPRINGS – The Harpeth Indians hosted the East Robertson Indians for a Thanksgiving tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 26.

East Robertson put up a good fight but ultimately lost 44-43 on a buzzer beating layup by Harpeth senior Grant Patterson.

Harpeth led at the end of every quarter, but the score remained tight throughout the contest. Harpeth led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter and held a 27-16 lead at half. East Robertson trimmed its deficit in the third quarter and cut the Harpeth lead to 34-31 heading into the final quarter.

East Robertson (2-3) made quite a run in the fourth quarter, even gaining a late 43-42 lead. With just seconds to go, Harpeth was able to steal the ball and call a timeout. Harpeth coach Robert Kreps drew up a play, and it worked to perfection.

Luke Gossett passed the ball to Patterson near the wing, and Gossett ran to the top of the key as Patterson faked a pass to him. Both East Robertson defenders had their eyes on Gossett, allowing Patterson to go in for a game-winning layup as time expired.

“This entire year we haven’t shot the ball well, and that was the case again tonight,” Kreps said. “What keeps us in games, and it’s the same thing as last year, is our grit on defense. I’m so proud of our defense and effort. I think we took six (or) seven charges, so I can’t be mad. I just can’t wait for our shots to fall.”

Darion Shannon led East Robertson with 19 points, while Scott Wiggins added eight. East Robertson hosts White House on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

“In the second half, I thought we played really well as far as our intensity and doing what we were asked to do,” East Robertson coach Kurt Canton said. “In the first half, we played weak and soft. We’re trying to get that out of them. It’s a growing process. We played a strong second half, we just need to put a whole game together.”
