White House Heritage teacher and coach Emily Nicholson has added a new title this school year.

Terri Palmiter and Mike Petrone shared golf coaching responsibilities last year, but Palmiter left for Hendersonville and Petrone retired in July. Nicholson has since stepped in as the new coach for both the boys’ and girls’ teams.

“(Principal) Mrs. Hass called me and asked if I could do golf,” Nicholson said. “We have a reputation at Heritage for having a good golf team, so I was excited to take it on.”

Nicholson played softball for coach Cindy Towers at White House from 2005-09 and continued her softball career at Cumberland through 2014. She then joined the Lady Patriots softball staff and helped them finish as AA state runners-up in 2018 under head coach Kim Snyder.

“We’ve been so blessed,” Nicholson said. “We’re really, really lucky to have had so much talent come through, both on and off the field. It’s been nothing but exciting and amazing for me, and I look forward to many more years with Heritage softball.”

Nicholson, who is a physical education teacher at Heritage, said she is familiar with golf despite not regularly playing it. The Patriots don’t have any girls on the team this year, but the boys are helping her learn the intricacies of the game.

“I know the basics,” she said. “My kids are great. They’re helping me learn. We’re going to be alright this year.”

The Patriots have one senior, Gavin Holland. He is joined in the lineup by Alec Spears, Cole Baker, Zach Logsdon and Carter Mason. Heritage opened its season with a default win over White House Aug. 1.
