WHITE HOUSE- The White House Heritage volleyball team opened region play last week, picking up a big 3-1 win over Greenbrier.

On top of it being their opening match of region play, Heritage coach Brandon Niblock knows that beating Greenbrier is always a big win.

“A win is a win when it comes to Greenbrier versus Heritage,” Niblock said. “It’s always a big rivalry game, so it doesn’t matter what the matchup is, it’s going to be close. Greenbrier came to play. They did a great job.”

After a tight start to the opening set, the Lady Patriots were able to take a commanding 14-7 lead on their way to taking the first set 25-11.

Heritage looked to be on their way to a similar result in the second set as they opened up an 18-11 lead. The Lady Bobcats had other plans, however, as they stormed back to tie the set at 18 and force a Heritage timeout. The timeout came too late though, as Greenbrier knotted things up at a set apiece, taking the second set 25-23.

“We were super undisciplined in the second,” Niblock said. “We won the first one a little decisively I’d say so we maybe got a little bit comfortable. You get a little comfortable in your game and think you know your opponent and don’t expect them to make adjustments and that’s exactly what Greenbrier did.”

Things remained close to start the third set as the two sides were tied at 8 through the first 16 points. The Lady Patriots then took 10 of the next 13 points to take another 18-11 lead. This time, they would hold off a Greenbrier run and take the third set 25-20.

The fourth and final set would look much more like the first set, as Heritage jumped out to an 11-3 lead on their way to taking the set and the match, 25-15.

Though still in the early stages of the season, Niblock wants to see his team continue to play their brand of volleyball for an entire match.

“I feel like we’re better than we showed. I feel like in the first set we played our brand and then got a little too comfortable in the second set, and even in the third set. Fourth set we played our brand and won it.”
