The Jo Byrns Red Devils hosted Westmoreland Friday night in the second preseason scrimmage for both teams.

The Eagles notched three touchdowns in varsity action, while Jo Byrns failed to find the end zone.

Collin Casteel scored a one-yard touchdown run on Westmoreland’s opening drive. The play was set up after 30 and 17-yard gains from fullback Tyson Leduc.

“We’ve still got things we need to work on, but right now our attitude is great when the kids are working hard for us,” Westmoreland coach Chad Perry said.

Westmoreland’s final two touchdowns came via runs from tailback Riley Mizrahi.

“We’re going to have some teams on our schedule this year where our challenge is going to be to eat up clock,” Perry said. “Our design tonight was really ball control and just getting it down the field without making mistakes. I think the guys did that well.”

Despite not reaching the endzone, Jo Byrns head coach Tom Adkins said he was pleased with his team’s improved physical play against the Eagles.

“I think tonight we tackled better,” Adkins said. “We were a little bit more physical than last week, but I still think Westmoreland was more physical than us. They’ve got a great program. We’ve played them the last couple of years, and you know you’re going to have to be physical when you play them.

One bright spot for the Red Devils was the play of new sophomore starting quarterback Ryan Dowlen, who made several plays through the air.

Dowlen connected with tailback Jake Chennault on a nine-yard screen pass on the Red Devils’ second drive, and he later delivered a 20-yard strike to Maxie Owens.

“I thin Ryan is doing fine,” Adkins said. “He understands the scheme. All he has done is improve since spring practice. He works as hard as anyone else on the team, and he looked a lot better this week than last week. He just consistently continues to improve.”

Adkins said the Red Devils will continue to try to build their depth before their season opener against Harpeth on Thursday, Aug. 22.

“We’re going to be a young football team, so we’re still developing some depth,” Adkins added. “We’ve got a lot of young kids that will end up playing both ways. We got a few questions answered tonight, but we still have a ways to go.”

Jo Byrns will travel to East Robertson next Friday to face DCA in the Robertson County Jamboree. Westmoreland will head to Portland for their Jamboree.
