The Jo Byrns Red Devils defeated the Red Boiling Springs Bulldogs with ease Friday night, 42-6, for their first Region 4-1A victory of the season.

The game was never in question, as the Red Devils scored a touchdown to take a lead in the first two minutes. Elijah Farmer and Brian Salas both found the end zone twice on the ground in the first half. Ryan Dowlen added two passing scores, as the Red Devils took a 42-0 lead into halftime.

Jo Byrns head coach opted to let less experienced and younger players get field action in the second half. Adkins says that even in a blowout, those repetitions can prove their worth down the road, especially due to the lack of scrimmages this season.

“It’s always important to get some experience for the younger kids on a Friday night,” Adkins said. “The Friday night experience is even better than a scrimmage. With the year being what it was, we didn’t have all the scrimmages. It was a good opportunity to get them in the game.”

This marks the first region win for Adkins’ team. He says it feels good to get the first one, but there is much more that needs to be done.

“It’s important,” Adkins said. “All region games are important… It’s good to get your first region win, but you got to have way more than one to get into the playoffs.

“We’ve got to continue to improve, and I think we’ve done that since Week 1. We’ve got to continue to improve, get better. We’ve got to execute on offense. Defensively, we’ve got to tackle well. We’ve got to get off the field on third down and not give up sustained drive.”

Jo Byrns will host East Robertson Friday night. Junior wide receiver Taylor Groves has made quite a name for himself, receiving a multitude of high-level football scholarships. Adkins will have to key in on him, while not forgetting about the other 10 guys on the field.

“(Groves is) an athlete. We’re going to have to account for him. He’s capable of scoring whenever he touches the football. You’ve got to keep up with where he lines up.

“But they’ve got other weapons, too. You can’t sell out on one kid in the game of football, but you do have to keep up with him.”
