The White House Lady Devils took home a 2-1 victory and a regular-season district title Thursday night, defeating crosstown rival White House Heritage.

White House sophomore midfielder Carmen Perkins opened the scoring in the 23rd minute by putting away a goal in a crowded box. The Lady Devils would hold onto that 1-0 lead through halftime.

Another sophomore would strike for the Lady Devils in the 62nd minute after the ball went high in the air off the crossbar. Forward Morgan Potts found the net and gave her team a 2-0 lead.

Heritage’s Bekah Lamberth was able to find the net in the 76th minute on a long strike that powered through the goalie’s hands. The Lady Patriots kept working and getting shots up, but they just could not tie the game and lost 2-1.

This is the first win for White House over Heritage since 2018 after losing all three matchups last season. The Lady Devils had never lost to their rivals before then and are now back in the winning column in the series.

“It’s a big win,” White House head coach Mike Felzien said. “Whenever we play Heritage and we can come away with a win like that, it’s exciting. It’s good for the girls.”

The Lady Patriots threatened to score all night, but many of their shots went wide. When they did hit the mark, sophomore White House goalkeeper Jordan Turner got her hands on the ball.

“She was on it tonight,” Felzien said. “They had 20-25 shots, you know. I don’t know how many were on goal, but she made some great saves. I mean, when you have a good keeper, (you) got high hopes, so she’s meant a lot so far.”

White House spent two weeks in quarantine due to COVID-19 concerns. Felzien is happy to be back and feels his team is getting back to form.

“This is our third game back after being off,” Felzien said. “We’re still a little rusty, but I think it’s coming together.”

Heritage head coach Mark Redferrin was frustrated that his team was not hitting the net as often as he would have liked.

“We’ve got to finish our opportunities,” Redferrin said. “We played really well the first half. It was a little bit more 50/50 in the second half, but we just didn’t finish our chances tonight. We had a lot of opportunities to score goals and just couldn’t get it in the net.”

These two teams will most likely face each other again like they did last season in the district and region tournaments.

“It’s a scrappy ball team that we played, and it was a great game,” Redferrin said. “It was fun to watch; it was fun to coach. We just came out on the short end of the stick tonight, but hopefully we’ll get to see that team again in a couple weeks.”

White House still has two non-region home games on the schedule. The Lady Devils will face Harpeth Hall on Tuesday and Greenwood on Wednesday. Heritage will be preparing for the district tournament as the 2 seed.
