Eagleville drops double-OT heartbreaker to Lewis County

EAGLEVILLE — Eagleville dropped its second game of the season in double-heartbreaking and overtime fashion to Region 5-2A foe Lewis County 47-41 Friday night.

“We did some uncharacteristic things and we let big plays beat us,” Eagleville head coach Floyd Walker said. “Lewis County is a really good team, but we just were not able to overcome big plays.”

Eagleville’s offense was clicking on all cylinders for a majority of regulation, scoring on five of its first seven drives. Ethan Cobb threw two touchdowns to sophomore Payton Lane from 34 and 13 yards, respectively, to tie the game at 14-14 after the first quarter.

“Our offensive rhythm really carried over from last week’s second half against Forrest and we were able to run the ball and that set the tone for us to pass,” Cobb said after finishing with 16 of 22 and 183 passing yards, four touchdowns along with 117 yards on the ground with 25 carries.

After trading scores, Eagleville’s Trevor Griffin blocked a Lewis County PAT to hold a 21-20 lead with three minutes until the half. The Panthers intercepted a Cobb pass the following drive and turned it into points to take a 26-21 halftime lead.

With starting running back Josh Stout out for the game, Wyatt McLemore gained 57 yuards on 10 attempts and added two second-half touchdowns, including a 3 yard touchdown with under 6 minutes remaining to extend Eaglevilles lead to 34-26.

Lewis County earned two possessions in the final six minutes and eventually tied the game at 34-34 on a Gavin Potts 6-yard touchdown with 55 seconds remaining.

In the opening overtime, Ethan Cobb added his fourth passing touchdown of the night to Trevor Griffin on fourth down. Griffin contributed 67 receiving yards on five catches while adding his second interception in two weeks to send the game into overtime.

Lewis County capitalized on Eagleville’s inability to score in the second overtime and clinched its fourth consecutive win over Eagleville on a 1-yard carry by Preston Spencer.

“I am proud of this group and I cannot stress to these kids enough that we are a great football team when we do things right, and we just could not do that tonight,” Walker said.

Lewis County torched Eagleville on the ground with 370 rushing yards. Jerrid Runions carried 151 yards on eight touches and a score, and Christian Nash contributed another 130 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown.

Eagleville looks to get back to its winning ways, traveling to Community this week in the “Battle for Highway 41.”
