The Siegel boys cross country team took home first place in the 5000-run at the Voyles Classic on Saturday, beating out second-place Independence High School by 68 points.
“We have the opportunity to be very good,” Siegel cross country coach Phil Young told TN MileSplit after the race. “Today, a couple of our best runners didn’t have their best days, but Dylan, a freshman, stepped up and finished No. 2 and Seth, a junior, also stepped up and finished No. 1. So, it was really important for us to have depth and do well going forward.”
“It was definitely rough, but starting was really hard too and just getting out there,” Siegel freshman Dylan Bennett added. “I think everyone did good.”
In addition to taking first place, Siegel also beat out five other Rutherford County teams in the AAA event; Riverdale (13), Oakland (14), Stewarts Creek (15) Blackman (16) and Smyrna (21) also competed in the event.
“We want to keep them grounded,” Young said. “Talent wins championships, character repeats championships. We’re trying to be a really good character-based group of young men and they have good leadership, work hard, and do their best to have that opportunity to have that chance to be there on Nov. 3.”
