Smyrna holds off Overton in defensive battle

NASHVILLE—The Smyrna Bulldogs came into Friday’s game against Overton looking to shake a two-game losing skid. The Bulldogs did just that, edging Overton 18-13.

“We made some mistakes to put ourselves behind the eight ball and Overton did a good job of capitalizing,” Smyrna coach Matt Williams said. “But in the end, I was very proud of our offense to come down and score when we had to have one.”

The running ability of running back Mikel Hartfield, who didn’t find out he was starting at quarterback until earlier in the week for usual quarterback Alex Bannister, coupled with big stops from the Smyrna defense was the difference.

“I just had to step up for my team and get the win,” Hartfield said. “I worked hard at it, practiced it, and just get better.”

Business picked up in the fourth quarter as both teams battled. With Overton only being down by 9 late in the third quarter, the Bobcats decided to run a fake field goal to catch the Bulldogs napping, but Smyrna’s special teams stood tall.

“I’m as proud of this team as any team I’ve ever had.” Williams said.

Hartfield scored the game-winning touchdown for Smyrna (3-2) with 19 seconds left from 1 yard out. From there, the Bulldog defense forced a handful of turnovers and Smyrna held on for the win.

“I thought we did an outstanding job on defense especially in the first half pitching a shutout,” Williams said.
