Hendersonville – Beech hosted Williamson County foe, Brentwood High School, on Friday night at Shackle Island Stadium in the season’s first scrimmage. The opening 15 minutes featured the special teams going through the kicking game. The Bucs, who have been known to block a kick or two, got one tonight as they blocked Brentwood’s third punt of the punting game session.

“It’s hard to tell how well we did without looking at film, but we did block a punt, and those are game changers. We’ll continue to work on all phases of the kicking game until we get the right guys in the right spots,” Beech coach Anthony Crabtree said.

The main event featured each team’s freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams playing two quarters each.

The Beech freshman jumped all over the visitors to win 14-0 to open the scrimmage. The varsity Bucs couldn’t stop the Bruins first two drives of the night and they cashed in for a quick 14 points to win the scrimmage. Using a combo of screen passes and runs up the middle of the Buc defense, the Bruins quickly scored on their first possession in nine plays to go up 7-0.

Beech moved the football down the field on their first possession, but failed on a fourth down at the Brentwood 15 yard line and turned it over on downs.

“There were some bright spots, we blocked well at times and our backs hit the holes well and made people miss, we just couldn’t finish our drives,” Crabtree said. “Our quarterbacks threw the ball fairly well, we have to continue to develop and mature and get better at the fundamentals of what we’re trying to do on both sides of the ball.”

In a repeat of the first possession, Brentwood mixed in some passes to go along with the quick hitters up the middle and made it 14-0. Beech once again drove the length of the field but came up short on a fourth down pass play.

“Defensively, we gotta find some defensive lineman! We play a lot of different guys there tonight. They exposed us early, we didn’t play very well. The secondary got better as the night went on and we definitely have to tackle better. We have to play with more intensity on defense,” added Crabtree.

The JV Bucs ended the evening with a 6-0 win over the Bruins in which was fairly evenly played between both schools.
