Bucs run over Bison with takeaways, big plays

Hendersonville – The Beech Buccaneers jumped out to a big lead and never looked back, coasting to a 55-7 win over county rival Station Camp.

The Bucs took a 35-7 lead into halftime and put the game out of reach early in the third quarter.

Despite the big lead at the break, Beech spent most of the first quarter making up for penalties and a fumble that halted promising drives.

Beech Head Coach Anthony Crabtree knows his team needs to avoid early mistakes, but was pleased with how his team responded.

“We were a little unfocused at the start with penalties and turnovers, but we were able to get that straightened out,” Crabtree said. “We talked about those issues at halftime, and I thought we played fairly well in the second half.”

The Bucs got on the board on their opening possession when quarterback Xaviere Jones found Zak Oden for a 43-yard touchdown connection, making the score 7-0.

After a fumble halted the next Beech drive, Ja’Sean Parks ran in a 24-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter, putting the Bucs up 14-0.

After that, the Bison responded with a 3-yard touchdown run to cut the Buccaneer lead in half at 14-7.

Station Camp Head Coach Shaun Hollinsworth was happy with his team’s effort early on, but pointed out their mistakes continue to plague them.

“We fought very hard to stay in the ball game early on, but a couple of turnovers really got us in bad shape,” Hollinsworth said. “Poor tackling has also been a problem we just need to keep working on.”

Adrian Johnson then produced a trio of second quarter touchdowns to spread out the lead for the Bucs. The first one was a 10-yard rumble, while the next two were set up by Station Camp fumbles. Johnson scored from 7-yards out and later from 21-yards to extend the Buccaneer lead to 35-7.

The Buccaneers blocked a punt from Station Camp to open the second half, setting up Parks’s second touchdown of the night, this time from 3-yards out.

A pair of Patrick Hill touchdowns from 23 and 76-yards out put a cap on the scoring on the night at 55-7.

“We were tackling well early, but as time went on, we weren’t able to do so,” Hollinsworth said. “Give credit to (Beech), they are a good ball team, and we will just pick our heads up and keep fighting.”

The Bucs remains undefeated at 8-0, and will host Gallatin next Friday on Senior night for the region championship next Friday.

Crabtree noted his team will need to be better next week from the get go.

“You can’t make the mistakes we made tonight, when you play for a region championship,” Crabtree said. “That will put us behind the eight ball, and we don’t do well behind the eight ball.”

Station Camp continues to seek their first win of the season, and they will hit the road for a meeting with Mt. Juliet next week.
