Commandos close out spring practice with Black and Gold game

HENDERSONVILLE – The Hendersonville Commando football team wrapped its spring practice Monday afternoon with its annual Black and Gold game.

In the end, it was the black squad taking the 27-21 victory, but now the coaching staff and players turn their attention to the hard-working summer months.

“We have a lot of holes to fill, but I will say our guys are working hard,” Commando coach James Beasley said. “We need to watch this film to see where we are with certain holes but we are hopeful to find guys that are ready to compete at the level we need them to compete at.”

Hendersonville is coming off a dominant spring scrimmage at Clarksville Northwest and looked good at times during their inter-squad scrimmage Monday afternoon.

“I thought our spring went well,” rising senior quarterback Drew Hohenbrink said. “We had a really good and productive scrimmage in Clarksville and no real injury issues. We need to continue to get closer as a team and continue to work hard this offseason so that we put ourselves in a position to reach the playoffs again; that is the starting goal for this team: the playoffs.”

The gold squad opened the game up with a 7-0 lead after scat back/do-it-all athlete Isaiah Chandler found a streaking Jalen House down the right sideline for the 65-yard score just five minutes into the scrimmage.

Keion Stafford tied the game 7-7 just nine minutes later after a lengthy black squad drive before ending the first quarter on a Cody Booker interception.

The black squad surged ahead by 13 points entering halftime following back-to-back Drew Hohenbrink touchdowns on the ground.

“It’s always nice to have guys back that played a lot last year, but it’s especially nice to have your quarterback back and a guy that was such a big leader for us last year,” Beasley said of Hohenbrink. “Drew has played in big games for us so we will lean heavily on him this year and his leadership to get us ready for the fall.”

Following a Brent Rowe touchdown, Helton Porter extended the lead 27-14 in the fourth quarter to go up 13 with just over 10 minutes left in the game.

After a black squad punt, Brent Rowe scored his second touchdown of the scrimmage from 20 yards out to bring the gold squad to within 27-21, but time ran out as the black squad claimed victory over their teammates.

Hendersonville will head into its summer workout program before fall camp begins in August.
