Tennys Sandgren has done a marvelous job of living up to his name.

On Saturday, the Gallatin native and former University of Tennessee standout defeated Fabio Fognini, the No. 12-ranked player in the world out of Italy 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 to advance to the fourth round at Wimbledon.

“At least there will be on in the quarters, for sure, which is cool,” Sandgren told the Associated Press. “I like that. I like the fact that there will be one guy pushing forward and looking to make an even further run. If there is one that makes a run, that means we don’t have to hear the ‘They are all gone by the second-round stuff.’”

During last year’s Wimbledon, Sandgren lost in the first round to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

Unfortunately, Sandgren’s run at the title came up short as he fell to Sam Querrey 6-4, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6 on July 8.

“I didn’t expect to really be in this position,” Sandgren said in a Twitter video posted by the ATP Tour. “I had a tough stretch in there where I wasn’t winning many matches. I feel like my game is coming together, and to feel like I am playing well, and actually, things are falling my way, which hasn’t been the case.”

During Sandgren’s run, he defeated Yasutake Uchiyama in Round 1, Gilles Simon in Round 2 and Fognini in Round 3.
