HENDERSONVILLE – 92 percent of Merrol Hyde’s scoring came from three different players Thursday night as the host Hawks took down Jo Byrns, 82-71.

Led by Asher Wolthers’ 28 points, Kolton Garvon and Isaac Stinson each poured in 24 points.

Wolthers scored 23 of his points in the second half after missing most of the first with foul trouble.

“I just wanted to come out and take what the defense was giving me,” Wolthers said of his second-half game plan. “I knew I could do what I wanted to do on the block, so I was looking for my opportunities. My teammates did an excellent job of getting open, and I was able to make some good passes for scores. I like getting those guys shots.”

Stinson scored all but one of his baskets at the rim while Garvon finished the game 8-for-10 from behind the 3-point arc.

“Kolton has had a few games where he has shot well, but nothing like that,” Merrol Hyde head coach Kory Craighead stated. “But, we know he is capable of doing this. You’re going to get some good looks when you have Asher crashing inside. It was nice to see Isaac attacking the rim.”

The victory is sweet revenge for a 77-55 defeat in Cedar Hill back in December, where point guard Jayden Caira scored a game-high 34 points for Jo Byrns.

“We wanted to come out of the gate and get after it,” Wolthers added. “They beat us pretty bad at their place, and they dunked on us in the last seconds up by 20. We came out with a chip on our shoulder.”

Merrol Hyde led the Red Devils following every quarter and ballooned their lead to as many as 21 points in the second half.

The Hawks are back in action Tuesday, Feb. 11, against HCA for Senior Night. The Hawks will host Nashville Central Christian on Thursday, Feb. 13, as their last tune-up game before the district tournament.

Wolthers honored for 1,000 points scored

On Friday, January 31, senior Asher Wolthers was honored for scoring his 1,000th career point against Knowledge Academy.

As of Thursday, February 6, Wolthers has 1,046 career points, 224 points behind Merrol Hyde career leader Connor McCutcheon.

If Wolthers were to surpass McCutcheon, he would need to average 32 points per game over the next seven games.

“It would mean a lot to break that record, but it would mean more if I did it the right way,” Wolthers said of the milestone. “I’ll have my opportunities to score, and if it happens, it happens. It’s just a privilege to have scored over 1,000 points in my career.”

Coach Craighead added that Wolthers has come a long way since his freshman playing days.

“It’s awesome to see because of how hard he has truly worked to get here,” he added. “He went from being an outstanding shooter his freshman year and playing sparingly to hitting his growth spurt and working on his inside game. Over the past couple of years, we have been trying to push him to be a little more selfish. He is such a good teammate that he wants to get everyone involved. On top of all that, we usually ask him to guard the other team’s best player night in and night out. I’m happy for him.”
