With Spring Fling concluding, it’s time to turn our attention to the high school football season.

While we still have a little over two and-a-half months before the regular season kicks off, we’ll be taking a look at the top five returning position players over the summer to help prepare you for the prep football season.

The first position group we’ll take a look at is the quarterbacks. Below are the top five returning QBs in Williamson County with three potential breakout candidates:

Top five returners:

1 – Brian Garcia, Ravenwood

2018 stats: 155-263 for 2,427 yards, 31 touchdowns, 12 interceptions

Garcia led Ravenwood to the state semifinals last year, while breaking the school’s single-season record for touchdown passes and being named the Main Street PrepsWilliamson County Offensive MVP. Although he loses top receiver Anthony Holmes, he does have another favorite target in Andrew Mason returning for his senior season. With the addition of senior standout Reggie Grimes II, the Ravenwood offense should get the ball back often. Look for Garcia to potentially top his breakout 2018 season.

2 – Nick Semptimphelter, BGA

2018 stats: 226-330 for 3,187 yards, 36 touchdowns, 11 interceptions

Semptimphelter had perhaps the best season of any pure thrower. Although he will be dealt a blow with the loss of his top two receivers from last season in Chico Bennet and Tiy Reed, who combined for 83 receptions, 1,287 yards and 13 touchdowns, Semptimphelter still stands a good shot as topping the 3,000-yard mark with Garnett Hollis Jr., Antonio Stevens and Kaleb Seay all returning.

3 – Ethan Cash, Independence

2018 stats: 121-211 for 2,208 yards, 22 touchdowns, 5 interceptions

Taking over the starting duties from Nate Cisco last year, Cash really came on strong as the season progressed. Independence loses its top two receiving threats in Isaiah Collier and Main Street PrepsWilliamson County Player of the Year TJ Sheffield, Cash still has three-star recruit Chayce Bishop and rising senior Brian Pierce to throw to this season. The duo combined for 21 receptions, 313 yards and two touchdowns, and should see those numbers increase as the go-to options for Cash.

4 – Cade Granzow, Brentwood

2018 stats: 177-291 for 2,324 yards, 16 touchdowns, 8 interceptions

Granzow and the Bruins had quite the 2018 season before running into Ravenwood in the postseason, including a thrilling 27-24 overtime win over Independence in the second round of the playoffs.

Granzow will have top target in junior Walker Merrill lining up out wide, plus Coleman Baker and Davis Witt lining up in the backfield. Granzow isn’t just dangerous with his arm as his scrambling ability will surely give opposing defense problems this season as well.

5 – Ryder Galardi, Nolensville

2018 stats: 116-184 for 1,742 yards, 18 touchdowns, 7 interceptions

For the second straight season, Nolensville made it to the second round of the 4A playoffs and Galardi was a big reason for that in 2018. Posting a 7-5 record, Galardi really emerged as one of the top quarterbacks in Williamson County.

Heading into his junior season, Galardi will have to make do without the departed Colton Dooley, Tim Stayskal and Zach Campbell, but he will have the benefit of having Tim Coutras and Jack Loveridge returning for their senior seasons.

Breakout candidates:

1 – Destin Wade, Summit

2 – Cade Walker, Page

3 – Wade Williams, Brentwood Academy
