Blackman standout guard Iyana Moore took the pressure off herself — in some ways — this week when she committed to play at Vanderbilt.

“I can’t relax at all because I still have to prove myself every day when I’m playing,” the 5-foot-8 junior guard said. “But it is a relief now that I’m going somewhere to play.”

Moore said she found an ideal comfort zone at Vanderbilt.

“Basically the environment is why I chose Vanderbilt,” she said. “They showed so much unconditional love and support and never game up on me. I’m all about the family environment.

“The SEC and ACC are big-time environments, and it’s big-time playing against the best and I really look forward to that.”

Moore helped lead Blackman to a perfect 12-0 regular-season district record and averaged more than 16 points a game.

“I’m excited for the opportunity she has to play in the SEC,” Blackman coach Wendi Scott said. “I think she’s the type of player who will excel at that level. She has the skill mindset, but she also has the work ethic. I think she’ll go there and contribute immediately.

“She can do it all. The fact she’s a major 3-point threat opens her game up even more. She’s able to score and her ability to defend anyone on the court will help her.”

Like Moore, Scott was glad the Lady Blaze standout made her decision early.

“Obviously we want what’s best for her,” Scott said, “but I think it take the pressure off her to go out and relax and enjoy her senior year. It can be a burden because they want to make the right decision. I’m glad she’s going to be able to enjoy her senior year and it will be fun to watch her enjoy it.”
