FRANKLIN – The Brentwood Bruins benefitted from a big five-run first inning in their 7-2 win over the Centennial Cougars on Monday.

Jack Rando doubled and Michael Finch singled before Will Laughlin was walked to load the bases with no outs in the top of the first. Karson Dreier was hit by a pitch in the next at bat to plate the first Bruin run, followed by a Centennial error at third a Cade Granzow RBI groundout to give Brentwood a 3-0 lead.

The Bruins ran that lead to 5-0 before the end of the inning thanks to an RBI single from Matthew Batts and an error on Centennial pitcher Bryson Sweeney on a bunt that allowed Isaac Moore to reach safely and Scott Collins to score.

The Cougars got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a Jonathan Poullard RBI double that scored courtesy runner Sam Cooper to cut the lead to 5-1.

After a scoreless second inning, Brentwood tacked on two more runs in the top of the third inning. Batts reached base with a leadoff double and was brought home on another double from Moore. Three batters later, Moore scored on a passed ball to run the Bruin lead to 7-1.

Centennial chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the fourth when John Michael Law touched home on an error at first base, pulling the Cougars to within 7-2, but that was as close as they would get as Finch and #5 combined for two shutout innings in relief to close the door on the 7-2 win.

Ross Wilkerson picked up the win for Brentwood, allowing just two runs on seven hits over five innings. He also struck out six batters.

Sweeney took the loss for Centennial, surrendering seven runs on six hits over two innings. Ben Brown was masterful in relief, giving up just two hits over five scoreless innings.
