FRANKLIN – Following an evenly-matched first quarter, the Centennial Cougars put it together offensively, eventually running away with a 59-39 win on Friday night.

The Raptors and Cougars went back and forth throughout the first quarter, but Ravenwood held an 11-10 lead entering the second quarter.

“They (Ravenwood) do such a good job of running some stuff,” Centennial coach Pete Froedden said. “And if you’re not ready to defend it, you’re going to get caught giving up some layups and fouling.”

It was Centennial’s defense that led to the Cougars’ first lead in the second quarter. Centennial extended its lead to double digits thanks to a 3-pointer from Andrew Ellison to go up 24-13 with just over two minutes left in the first half. Centennial kept its foot on the throttle, pushing the lead to 32-18 at the half on a buzzer-beating 3 from Ellison.

“Andrew’s that glue guy for us,” Froedden said. “He’s never going to score 25, but he’s going to hit a couple 3s, a couple rebounds and take a charge…do some things that other guys may not do.”

The Cougars jumped out to hot start in the third quarter, extending their lead to as much as 19 points. Once they had the lead, the Cougars never relinquished it. Ravenwood cut the deficit to 16 in the second half, but the Raptors never could get to within striking distance.

“Everyone’s trying to position themselves for the tournament, and now we’ve been through (the district) one time,” Froedden said. “Everyone will be making their adjustments, so it’ll be interesting to see where the league goes in the second half.”

The Ravenwood Lady Raptors pressed their way to a big first-quarter lead over the Centennial Lady Cougars and never looked back, cruising to an easy 68-22 win.

Ravenwood got a few players back from injuries, which helped fuel the 68-point outburst.

“We’ve had three varsity players out 2.5-3 weeks, and tonight was the first night with two of them back tonight,” Ravenwood coach Mariska Harris said. “So, (we’re) just trying to get some chemistry and smoothness on the court.”

Centennial couldn’t get any offensive rhythm going in the first half, finishing with just four points. However, the Lady Cougars switched from a zone to a man-to-man defense, which helped somewhat slow down the Ravenwood attack. However, the Lady Raptors still lead 32-4 at the break.

The Lady Cougars went on a nice run after halftime, outscoring Ravenwood 13-4. Midway through the quarter, however, Ravenwood regained control of the game, pushing its lead to 43-17.

In the final quarter, Ravenwood was on cruise control, easily capping off the 68-22 win.
