CHARLOTTE – The Dickson County High School wrestling team defeated Creek Wood, 54-36, during a tr-match last Thursday, Dec. 6.

Both Dickson County schools defeated the other participating school – Donelson Christian Academy. The Red Hawks shut out DCA, 66-0, while DCHS beat them, 60-36.

Dickson County Coach John Patterson said his team always looks forward to wrestling Creek Wood.

“Number one, we know it’s going to be a good match,” Patterson said. “But these kids know each other, a lot of them went to school together growing up and they look forward to this match. It’s not really like a rivalry, it’s more like it’s fun to them, they enjoy getting together to wrestle them. I love seeing them get together before and after the match getting together, talking together.”

On Thursday, Nov. 29, the Cougars hosted Clarksville and Hillwood. Dickson County lost the first match to Clarksville, 66-24, but wrestled hard in the second match to tie a very good Hillwood team, 36-36, despite giving up 24 points due to forfeits for not having wrestlers in certain weight classes.

On Saturday, Dec. 1 the Cougars and Lady Cougars placed 14 out of 27 teams at the Coyote Classic at Clarksville Northwest High School despite having only nine scoring wrestlers. Raven Talton finished first winning two of her matches while Shavonna Vaughn also finished first winning three matches.

Rontaysia Payne placed third winning three matches as well and, for the boys, Cole Campbell finished third winning five matches.

“I’m really impressed for where we are this far into the year,” Patterson said. “I had a feeling we were going to have a good season, but we’re much farther ahead than where I thought we would be. I’m just really impressed with all the young wrestlers we’re seeing. They’re doing a fantastic job.”

On Friday, Nov. 30, Creek Wood traveled to Cheatham County to take on the Cheatham County Cubs and Fairview Yellow Jackets. The Red Hawks dropped both matches, 39-27 to Cheatham County and 60-18 to Fairview.

Next, the Red Hawks traveled to Montgomery Central and swept East Robertson, 48-36, and Montgomery Central, 36-27.

On Tuesday, Dec. 4, Creek Wood brought out the rooms again sweeping East Nashville, 42-22, and Hume-Fogg, 60-12.

“I think we’ve wrestled pretty well,” Creek Wood coach Jimmy Murphy said. “We’ve had a lot of injuries, we had four starters out against Dickson and that hurt us a lot. The two Garland boys, who are two of the better wrestlers on my team, haven’t wrestled much and I just got to get them healthy and back out on the mat. Weston, who qualified for state last year hasn’t gotten to wrestle yet this year and Chase, his brother, has only wrestled one match. So, we’ve just got to get healthy.”
