EAGLEVILLE — Stingy second-half defense lifted Eagleville’s girls over Richland 43-36 for their first win Thursday as the Lady Raiders scored just seven points after halftime.
“It is great see our girls respond the way they did," Eagleville coach Chris Lynch said after his team relinquished a nine-point, first-quarter lead to then trail 29-22 at the half. They are so young but they made the necessary adjustments.”
Eagleville’s front-court presence created mismatch problems for the Lady Raiders. Senior Anna Grace Clement finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds while freshman Cadence Chapman scored 14 on 7 of 9 shooting with six rebounds.
“(Chapman) played well on both ends, but especially at covering our backsides when (Richland) would get behind our guards,” Lynch said.
Chapman contributed six blocks in a defensive effort that held Richland to just two field goals in the final 16 minutes. Eagleville played a more disciplined second half, allowing just five free-throw attempts.
“We gave up a lot of layups and free throws in the first half, so cutting off their drives played a big role in the second half,” Lynch said.
Haylee Ferguson rounded out the trio of double-digit scorers with 10 points. Freshman Eliza McClaran added six rebounds and seven assists.
