EAGLEVILLE — Entering Monday night, Huntland Lady Hornets held an unblemished record of 12 consecutive wins against District 8-A opponents.

The same could not be said Monday night after Eagleville thwarted the Lady Hornets 63-44 in the Region 4-A semifinals.

“These girls believe in each other and we just needed girls to step up and everyone did that tonight,” Eagleville coach Chris Lynch said. “We stuck to the game plan. We limited transition buckets, made them shoot 3s, and did not let the drive past us.”

The Lady Eagles defense held Huntland to 29-percent shooting and 22 percent from 3. The Lady Hornets had few inside looks, forcing 27 three-point attempts while Eagleville cleaned up second-chance opportunities with a plus-26 rebounding margin.

“We rebounded our butt off and went hard after everything,” Lynch said. “They were aggressive when we caught it, which our girls did a great job of staying strong and securing the ball.”

Anna Grace Clement grabbed 16 rebounds despite a foul-trouble-shortened evening. Lizzy Thompson collected 10 boards for her double-double with 14 points.

Eagleville was hot from the jump, but no player was hotter than Haylee Ferguson. The senior point guard scored on three straight triples and led her team with 17 first-half points to garner a 30-13 halftime lead.

“(Huntland) keyed on other scorers which gave me the opportunity to hit shots for my team,” Ferguson said as she finished with 18 points and four assists. “My role on most nights is to move the ball, but as a leader I needed to take more shots, which opened up my teammates in the second half.”

Huntland narrowed the deficit to six at 5:05 of the third. Eagleville then broke off a 12-1 run to extend a 17-point lead with eight minutes left. Makayla Moates led her team down the stretch, scoring 23 points, including 8 of 9 from the free-throw line.

Eagleville aims to repeat as Region 4-A Champions with a rematch against Moore County Wednesday night at 7 p.m. R Eagleville High School.
