NASHVILLE – The Hume-Fogg Knights fought back from a seven-run deficit, forcing extra innings and topping the East Nashville Eagles 16-11 in nine innings on Tuesday night at Shelby Bottoms Park.

The Eagles got off to a hot start going up 8-4 after the fifth inning. Then the Knights started the comeback. Hume-Fogg reeled off three runs in the sixth off East Nashville pitcher Royal Hobson to cut the Eagles lead down to one. The Knights then tied the game 8-8 and force extras.

“That meant everything, Royal Hobson is an incredible player,” Hume-Fogg coach Jesse Blair said. “To see our boys fight against somebody of that caliber was incredible and I think without that sixth (inning), we don’t see anything in the later innings.”

East Nashville had a few opportunities to end the game before extra innings was even a possibility.

“We got too content,” Eagles coach Roy McGinty said. “We gave up four runs with two outs one time, we got too content with our aggression on the base pads and offensively. We were very lackadaisical on defense in the late innings because we’re a little too content.”

A missed catch in foul territory would’ve given the Eagles a much-needed win to stay near the top of the district, but instead Hume-Fogg got the sweep to stay in sole possession of second place.

“Yesterday (Hume-Fogg) put a six-spot on us and we folded, and today we put a seven-spot on them all the way through to the sixth inning and we folded,” McGinty said. “We’ve got to finish ball games.”

In extras, Hume-Fogg catcher Evan Bruxvoort brought in two runs to give the Knights a 10-8 lead, and it seemed that Hume-Fogg had pulled off the comeback. However, Hobson came up clutch with a two-run RBI to tie the game 10-10 and send it to a ninth inning.

In the next inning, things began to unravel for the Eagles. Hume-Fogg took the lead on a wild pitch with two outs. Then Bruxvoort knocked in another 2-run RBI to extend the Knights lead to three and put the game on ice.

“That was really impressive because earlier in the game he came up with the based loaded and two outs and he looked at three straight strikes,” Blair said. “I know that had him down, so to see him comeback like that was incredible.”
