NASHVILLE—The Maplewood Lady Panthers and East Nashville Lady Eagles scratched, clawed, and battled for four quarters with Maplewood coming out on top with a 60-58 win.

Maplewood senior forward Ye Taviea Carter had a big game, finishing with 19 points — including some clutch 3-pointer in the fourth quarter. Her experience made a huge difference in the game.

“It’s really good to have that experience on the team,” Maplewood assistant coach Tony Flaggs said. “(To) just have someone who’s seen this before and can let them know, ‘hey we’ve been through this before, you can hold your head up when you make a mistake, just keeping the negativity out of the team’s mind.’”

A tight game throughout saw 12 ties and 12 lead changes, including at the end of the first and third quarters. However, the fourth quarter made the difference as the Lady Panthers forced East Nashville into turnovers and missed free throws.

“We put ourselves in a situation where we were shooting some free throws, we were 14-21 at the line,” East Nashville coach Lois Donaldson said. “We had our chances and with young team like us you’re going to take your hits.”

The Lady Eagles were down 59-56 when junior guard London Fairs was fouled on a three-point attempt with a chance to tie the game, but missed her first attempt, hit the next two and Maplewood hit one free throw to come out on top. Flagg was proud of his team’s performance.

“I’ve been here three years and it’s been a lot of adversity, a lot trials, a lot of doubters, a lot of criticism, but we’ve been sticking together and we’ve been working hard just trying to put together a formula, a recipe, a team and we finally got one.”

In the boys’ game, East Nashville stayed undefeated in league play with a 58-55 win over Maplewood.

Junior forward Lester Shaw recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Taras Carter also pitched in on the scoring with 15 points.

“The faster we went, the more mistakes we made,” East Nashville coach Jim Fey said. “Our defense in the second half I liked it, we had about six or seven straight stops.”

The game started very fast for both team as they went into halftime with Maplewood leading 34-32. But in the third quarter, the Eagles defense tightened up and held the Panthers to just six points in the quarter.

Maplewood senior guard Bobo Hodges had 19 first-half points, but did not score again until late in the fourth quarter.

“We focused on him (Hodges) and zoned the rest of the guys because of how athletic he is and he makes his money in basketball by getting into the lane and scoring so we just boxed him until he scored late in the fourth.” Fey added.
