Ensworth takes series win over JPII to open season

The Ensworth Tigers kicked off the 2019 baseball season, taking two of three games against rival Pope John Paul II last week. 

On Monday, JPII pulled out a narrow 5-4 win. Garrett Schultz took the loss, throwing six innings and allowing eight hits and five runs while walking one and striking out two. 

Devon Obee carried the Tiger offense, going 2-for-2 with three RBIs, while Drew Byers had the other Tiger RBI. Patrick Vanderbergh, Schultz and Byers also tallied a hit. 

JPII’s Dominic Pianto kept the Ensworth offense in check, throwing five innings and striking out nine Tigers. 

On Tuesday, Ensworth returned the favor with a 9-3 win. The Ensworth offense found its rhythm as Schultz tallied two RBIs and Obee and Byers each had one. Vanderbergh and Schultz each had multi-hit games, while Elijah Brooks, Byers, Gage Young and Andrew Yu added hits. 

Brooks got the win on the mound, tossing seven innings of four-hit ball. He allowed three runs and struck out seven batters. 

 

 

In the rubber game, Ensworth pounded out a 12-5 win on Wednesday night behind six doubles as the Tigers scored in every inning. Four pitchers contributed on the mound as Morgan Willis took the win after going 4.1 innings and allowing just two hits and three runs while striking out four. 

Jake McAllister, Byers and Dax Braemer came on in relief, combining for no hits and two runs in two innings while striking out four. 

C.Cobb had a big game, going 2-for-4 with a homerun three RBIs, while Schultz and Brooks added two RBIs each. Schultz and Yu both went 3-for-4, while Brooks (2) and Obee (2) had multiple hits as well.
