Stewarts Creek senior quarterback Alex Krenk helped lead the Red Hawks to an easy 49-6 home region victory over McGavock Thursday night.
The defense set the tone for the Red Hawks, forcing McGavock to punt the ball eight times and turn the ball over on downs and fumble once.
“When you’re able to get a three-and-out for two or three possessions to start the game, I think that really gives you some confidence, and our offense was able to build off of that moment,” Stewarts Creek coach Ben Caudill said.
The Red Hawk offense was in total control the entire game.
“I think our success offensively definitely started with the field position we were able to get,” Caudill said.
Krenk led the way with over 100 rushing yards and a touchdown and he also threw two touchdown passes.
Wide receiver Jaylen Moore, Gabriel Walker, Gage Hoover and Tayden Mounivong also scored touchdowns.
The win gives the Red Hawks a 4-3 record on the season and improves their region record to 2-1.
“I think overall as coaches you’re looking for things that you need to improve, but at the same time you have to enjoy a big region win, especially at home,” Caudill said. “I’m really proud of our team, and I’m excited to get back to work Monday.”
McGavock played just its second game of the season because of cancellations due to COVID-19. The Raiders looked like a team that hasn’t had much practice time.
“We haven’t been in the weight since March 14th, so no team-building. We had no spring practice,” McGavock coach Jay Gore said. “You go into the summer, and the whole month of June we couldn’t do anything. July 6th was the first time we got to come back and do anything.”
Seven times the Raiders started their possession on the 20-yard-line, and the offense suffered because of the bad field position. The Raiders offense looked out of sync the entire game, and their only score came with 11:20 remaining in the fourth quarter.
“The first half we played tonight was 100 times better than the first half we played last week,” Gore said. “We’ve got to eliminate the bad things and just keep focusing on the good things and keep making those better.”
