Oakland and Stewarts Creek played a classic District 7-AAA double-header Friday night that was decided by a total of four points.
In girls action, with 20 seconds left to play, Red Hawks’ senior standout Madison Henegar broke a 43-43 tie with a free throw, and seconds later Zyion Shannon hit one more to ice a 45-43 victory for Stewarts Creek.
Oakland’s boys, meanwhile, pulled out a tough 52-50 decision over the Red Hawks.
“I was just thinking ‘I need to make these,’” Henegar said. “I felt like if I didn’t I would be letting my team and my coaching staff down because we needed the win.”
As per usual in District 7-AAA, the girls race is a tight one, and the game Friday split a third-place tie between the two schools. The win keeps the Red Hawks just two games out of first.
“This district is tough night in and night out,” Stewarts Creek coach Bianca Hensley said. “Oakland had a really good game plan for us. I am proud of our kids for playing through adversity being down most of the game and not quitting.”
The fourth period started with free throws by Oakland’s Ni’Kiah Chesterfield and Claira McGowan that gave Oakland, which had led since the start of period two, its biggest lead of the game at 33-24.
The Red Hawks answered with a 10-0 run, capped by a 3 from Henegar’s freshman sister Megan that put Stewarts Creek in the lead for the first time since leading 3-2, 34-33, with just over five minutes left.
From there it was a free-throw shootout to the end, which played well for the Red Hawks, who shot just 33 percent from the field on the night.
Stewarts Creek made up for it defensively, forcing 21 turnovers (seven in the fourth) including eight steals.
Foul trouble killed the Patriots as players began fouling out down the final stretch, including Nicole Egeruoh, who had 12 points and eight rebounds at the time of her departure.

The boys picked up where the girls left off, with a slugfest down to the wire, but in the end the Patriots avoided upset with the two-point win.
With the game tied at 49-49, Oakland had the ball and held for the last shot and was successful on Carrington Allen’s jumper that seemingly ended the game.
However, the officials put one second back on the clock, and there was plenty of drama left in the game’s final tick as each team made a trip to the foul line and hit one of two.
